Warning Lights Mean Engine Repair

The warning lights that pop up on your car’s dashboard usually spell trouble–it’s always better to trust the professionals than have to dish out for costly engine repair. Whether it’s something small and simple or complicated and costly, taking your vehicle in for a once over is a smart move.

Brake System—This red exclamation point in a circle indicates one of three problems—either the parking brake is on, there is a problem with the braking system or fluid is low, or an ABS issue. Ensure that thee parking brake is fully released, and if the light doesn’t turn off, schedule an appointment with a professional.

Check Engine—The most familiar dashboard icon, this symbol lights up to indicate that the vehicle needs engine repair. The engine computer will set a Diagnostic Trouble Code, which can be picked up with a professional scanning tool.

Battery Light—Mimicking the battery under the hood, this light comes on to alert the driver to low voltage, or a malfunctioning charging system. A mechanic can quickly check that the battery terminals are clean, the battery condition, and the alternator belt.

Glow Plug (diesel)—This light (only on diesel vehicles) indicates that the engine’s glow plugs are warming up and the engine shouldn’t be started until this light goes out.

Traction Control—This illuminates when a vehicle’s anti-skid / traction control, or electronic stability system is in use. This symbol usually lights up in wet or icy conditions.

Low Fuel Light—Probably the most commonly seen light, this miniature fuel pump indicates that your gas tank is running low!

Coolant Temperature Warning—This symbol indicates that the engine temperature has exceeded normal limits and is overheating. A mechanic will be able to check the coolant level and search for any leaks, the fan operations, and the radiator.

Airbag Fault—When illuminated, this indicates that the vehicle has identified a fault in the airbag system. A professional scanning code will be able to identify the fault.

Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)—Displayed as a deflating tire, this symbol indicates low tire pressure, or a sensor malfunction. Checking the tire pressure will usually eliminate the problem, while some issues require a more extensive professional diagnosis.

Fog Lamp—This light simply indicates that the vehicles fog lights are switched on.

Oil Pressure Warning—This oil can symbol can point to serious problems under the hood. Immediately take your vehicle in for maintenance, or you could be looking at costly engine repair or replacement.

ABS Light—When illuminated, this light means the engine computer has set a Diagnostic Trouble Code, and needs to be diagnosed with a professional scanning tool.
